Topeka EAC - Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas *This is not the linked regular DAILY RECAP SERIES AND WILL BE POSTING THAT LATER ON .TODAY
Back in 1961 there was a catholic ware house and book store that students bought their textbooks for the school year and they hired a persons to live in an apt on the site and take care of stocking and customers which were rare during most of the year. .. THIS WAS THE FIRST HOME OF OBAMA AND WHERE I FIRST SAW HIM AS A NEW BORN HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL TO WHERE HIS MOTHER HAD THE LIVE IN JOB THAT MY MOTHER FOUND LOOKING FOR HER AN APT and said she would help make sure the work was done and MY dad, her great uncle would stop by and bring her milk from our cows also a few times a week.. etc., also This much be the site but the warehouse is gone of course now but rebuilt to catholic charities. I will call and see if anyone knows the history as its seems he whole block is owned by them.
TOPEKA HAD A HORRENDOUS ZONING AND WOULD NOT LET AN EXTENDED FAMILY LIVE IN ONE HOUSE IN OUR AREA AT ALL . I do not more of the details of why an apt was needed to be found when she got out of the hospital as not all was shared with me at age 16 as if I did not know what the real world was like yet.. she had had a room or apt in Topeka but where she had been living after Fred Phelps would not sign for her to go to high school is unknown to me.. as she had had a job as a waitress or fast food place at age 14.. , as could not locate her dad and ended up on CBS TV DEBATING HILLARY DURING THE DEMOCRATIC election in 1960 when it was already cold . but the convention was in July and I saw it on TV and remembered her from few occasions I had seen her in Topeka for things so it could not have been the convention as that was in LA. may have been a big rally ... etc. Its in the Daily Recaps back in 2012. ,
But back to the first home of Obama ..
the ware house had a loading dock in the back and the building next door to the current catholic charities has one. but its been remodeled?
I checked this back in 2012 and GOOGLE DID NOT HAVE AS MUCH INFO ON THIS AREA THEN OR I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO FIND IT. .online I do not think the Interstate 70 which was not there then is over it as its too close to the river but its the area.. but the building then was old and had been through the 1951 flood which came up to 500 block on Kansas Ave. I also linked the google map for 1748 Randolph where I grew up but we also had a working farm most of my years about 14 miles at Dover , KS then Dad bought pasture land in Wabaunsee county. where when they retired they build a home on it. and lived there until he got ill and they moved into Wamego before he died. The farm at Dover was the one the first CONSERVATION AWARD and its at HWY 4 AND LEAVENWORTH TRAIL AT DOVER KS and found it on line and the terraces the Army Corp of engineers made are still there and hen house that was fairly new also.. but could not see the house if still there he remodeled in the trees. . in the pictures ..and the big red barn my dad painted one summer. and good memories helping dad as a child. This is all in the Daily Recaps the last half of 2012. It was there that RACY'S BONNIE LAD WAS BORN THAT BEGAN A CATTLE DYNASTY IN MILKING SHORTHORN BREED. whose descendants were still winning Blue Ribbons decades later.
